Phoenix certainly had a rough beginning. He was found very emaciated in Chavez County with a lip tattoo, which means he had entered at least one race. We named this gorgeous boy Phoenix as he is a symbol of hope and better things to come like a “phoenix rising from the ashes.”
Upon researching his tattoo, we discovered Phoenix was originally named Gathering Evidence and was foaled in Florida before coming to New Mexico in 2016. He started 32 races between 2016-2020 with three wins, earning a combined $49,000. Apparently his luck then changed.
During his long recovery with us, he has appreciated the constant attention from our trainers and volunteers, and he has nearly met his ideal weight. Phoenix has begun to revisit his ground skills with our trainers and will be assessed under saddle soon now that he’s healthier. We’ll be putting shoes on him to correct his hooves and address a slight limp when trotting.
