Cyan Schrader

For as long as Cyan can remember, she has been obsessed about anything horse related. As a teenager she had a horse, but it was down the road from where she lived. She saw it every day, did chores, and took care of it without a second thought. Unfortunately, her horse wasn’t waiting for her when she walked out her door. She always knew she wanted a horse that was on her property someday.

When Cyan moved to New Mexico, she quickly started looking for a place to volunteer with horses. In 2018, Cyan began volunteering at Walkin N Circles Ranch. Here she found a variety of horses where she could share her love and compassion with them and help them find forever homes.

In 2019, volunteers who were interested in helping prepare horses for the WNCR Adopt-a-Thon were assigned horses to work with. The Adopt-a-Thon is a horse show featuring WNCR horses that are ready for adoption. Cyan was assigned to a mare named, Blue. While Cyan liked Blue, it was not love at first sight. Cyan’s goal was to get Blue ready for someone else to adopt. As the weeks of training passed by, however, they began to grow closer and when it was time for the Adopt-a-Thon, Cyan knew that Blue was the horse for her. In September 2019, Cyan made it official and adopted Blue.

Cyan was living on the west side of Albuquerque and wasn’t able to keep Blue at her place, but she had begun looking for a place near WNCR where she could have a horse on her property. It took a few months, but she found a place, and in December 2019, she was finally able to bring Blue home. She and Blue loved their new house, but as time passed, she knew that Blue needed a buddy.

Gizmo was a WNCR horse waiting to be adopted. He was fostered elsewhere, but he had developed an eye issue and felt the foster family felt they were not able to take care of him properly. He came back to the ranch for treatment. Shortly after his return, Cyan was at the ranch, saw Gizmo, and instantly knew that he was the one for her and Blue. Cyan helped treat Gizmo’s eye under the supervision of Ashley, our ranch manager, and the veterinarian. In the end, Gizmo lost sight in that eye, but it did not deter Cyan. In December of 2020, Gizmo came home to be with Blue.

“Gizzy,” as she calls him, and Blue have since become very bonded. Losing sight in his one eye has not slowed Gizzy down. He enjoys his home, gets into trouble like any other horse, and he and Blue watch out for each other. They both love being worked by Cyan. She is the first to admit that it is a lot of work, but Cyan wouldn’t have it any other way. Her only regret is that there is not enough time in the day to spend as much time as she would like with her horses, dog and three cats. But, being able to look out her kitchen window and see her horses in her backyard is a dream come true for her!
