Edgewood, NM (January 30, 2004)-Walkin N Circles Ranch/ New Mexico Horse Rescue is raising funds to rase a barn for its three newest rescues - three pregnant mares whose lives took an unexpected turn last fall. These horses were among tens of thousands of pregnant mares living on PMU (Pregnant Mare Urine) ranches in Canada, where their urine has been collected for its estrogen to make the hormone replacement therapy drugs Premarin and Prempro. Demand for these drugs has decreased dramatically and 70% of the PMU ranches are being closed, leaving over 20,000 pregnant mares to find new homes or face an uncertain fate at auction.

Walkin N Circles volunteers learned the plight of the mares in November and set out to collect enough money amongst themselves to try to save at least one. The volunteers and some of their friends ended up with enough funds to save three.

The mares arrived at Walkin N Circles from Canada on January 25, to the smiles and applause of the crowd of volunteers waiting to greet them. Now the task at hand is to build a nursery - that is, a barn with large, safe, comfortable stalls where the mares can give birth to their foals, which are due in late spring or early summer.

“We estimate we'll need about $5,000 for the materials and about 50 skilled labor hours to build the barn.” says John Novotny, president of the non-profit, all volunteer organization. “We hope the community will support us with their donations and their time.”

Monetary donations, which are tax deductible, may be sent to Walkin N Circles Ranch at P.O. Box 626, Edgewood, NM 87015. If you would like to help build the barn or can donate building materials, please sent an email to wncrequinerescue@aol.com or call (505) 286-0779.

Founded by John and Colleen Novotny in 2002, Walkin N Circles Ranch, Inc. exists to provide a safe, comfortable home for horses who have been neglected, abused, or are no longer wanted. For more information about the organization, visit www.wncr.org on the web.
